For years, doctors have been saying that Stress is the cause of IBS.

For years, doctors have been saying that Stress is the cause of IBS. I’m Dr. Bunny Vreeland, and, while I believe and agree that Stress does exacerbate IBS, my personal research shows that 100% of my clients were involved in some sort of Body Trauma prior to the onset of IBS. After researching the histories of many of my clients’ over the past seven years, it is my belief and contention that IBS is caused by Body Trauma rather than stress, alone.

I started thinking about this connection when a group of children between nine and eleven years of age started showing signs of IBS. “What could be causing this new surge of younger clients?”. I could not find a common thread expect they all talked about stress. I thought the doctors might be right, but I also believed that just about everyone has stress in their life. I couldn’t understand why some people got IBS and others didn’t if stress was affecting them, all.

One day, one of the parents (of a 10-year old client) mentioned about getting a new book-bag for the client because, “They carry so much weight that the last one ripped out and it cost more to repair it than to get a new one.” I began to wonder about the connection of the book-bags and IBS.

As I questioned each of my young clients and their parents, I found that every one of them were carrying excessively heavy book bags which was an assault on their growing bodies. This theory was further supported when I spoke to Dr. Dave Lemons, a local chiropractor and associate, who told me he had been seeing young children as a result of the damage the heavy book bags were causing.

I called the Superintendent of Schools in Oxnard, CA. I asked her about the book-bags and was told that there had been so many complaints that they were now recommending pushcarts for the books and would be discontinuing the backpack type of book-bag. During the transition, I noticed a decline in the clients between 9-11 years old.

I now focused on finding out if all my clients had encountered any kind of Body Trauma just prior to the onset of IBS. In each case, this proved to be a valid concern.

Some examples include:

Maia, a 22-year-old photography student, came to me originally to quit smoking when she disclosed that she suffered from IBS. Maia had traveled to Puerto Rico at age 15, where she became violently ill from food poisoning, twice (Body Trauma). Maia was given a series of antibiotics and, while the poisoning cleared up, she suffered from IBS for a couple years after that experience. We were able to completely control the IBS with the exception of the few times when she drank coffee. These are Maia’s words: “I first went for hypnotherapy to quit smoking, which I did after 3 sessions. Then I discovered hypnotherapy works with IBS. I was excited because I have been suffering with IBS since I lived in Puerto Rico. After 4 sessions my symptoms were 90% under control and now I have had no symptoms for over a year. And, I haven’t had a cigarette, either.”

Donald, a 47-year-old attorney came to see me because was struggling with his practice because he was always in the bathroom. When I questioned him, I discovered that he had been in a car accident (Body Trauma) and had suffered some serious injuries as a result of the accident. He was hospitalized for a week and sent home. Shortly after, he began having constant diarrhea. He didn’t want to see the doctor because he felt that the stay in the hospital was were he originally contracted IBS. Donald ate a lot of ‘diet food’, which seemed to exacerbate the IBS problem. Just getting off the processed foods seemed to help. Donald reported that his IBS symptoms were under control by the 4th session unless he ate any of the processed foods that caused him distress. These are Donald’s words: “I remember times when I had diarrhea so bad that it lasted for over two weeks without a break! I hated going to my doctor because nothing they gave me worked. Hypnotherapy is the best thing I have done for the IBS. I haven’t had a flare up for over a year.”

Beverly, has three grown daughters who sent her to me after I worked with one of the daughters to reduce her weight. When she discovered that Hypnotherapy could help IBS, she got very excited and wanted me to help her mother.

Beverly remarried after her first husband died and, as a result, had given birth to a ‘surprise’ baby a year before (Body Trauma) I saw her. Twenty years had past since her last child had been born and Beverly experienced a difficult fourth pregnancy. It was shortly after the baby was born that Beverly started experiencing IBS symptoms. Since she was already seeing the doctor for post-delivery check-ups, she told the doctor about the symptoms and he diagnosed her with IBS. Her daughters were doing most of the grocery shopping for her when she came for her first session. Beverly had a ‘thing for cheese’ which we found was a trigger for the IBS flare-up. After doing some testing, Beverly found that she was able to enjoy low-fat string cheese, which made her happy. These are Beverly’s words: “My IBS was so bad I had to carry an extra change of clothing wherever I went. I was becoming a prisoner in my own house. After 2 hypnotherapy sessions I began to feel better. It really helped me to get control of my body.”

These are just a few of the IBS case studies I have worked with. With each client, an obvious Body Trauma was present shortly before the onset of IBS symptoms charge! A Hypnotherapist is a great tour guide but he/she must have the client’s cooperation for this to be successful.

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome can include:

• Diarrhea or loose bowel movements
• Constipation
• Incontinence
• Mucus in the stool
• Painful abdominal cramping
• Bloating
• Gas
• Rectal discomfort
• Headaches/backache
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Poor appetite/weight loss
• Wanting to eat frequently to “move things along” – weight gain
• Sleeplessness
• Fluid retention
• Fatigue

These symptoms can occur in any combination or individually. Certain foods may irritate the problem, which can cause a patient to avoid those foods and even become afraid to eat. Some are afraid to leave the house. And when they do, they have to know every bathroom between their home and their destination.

Who Suffers From Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

• It is estimated that between 10-20% of the population have Irritable Bowel Syndrome
• It affects up to 35 million people in the United States
• IBS affects 1 out of 5 people, two thirds of which are women
• Average age of onset is 20-29 years old in adults and 9-11 years old in children
• IBS is the second leading cause of employee absenteeism

What Causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Anything which depresses the immune system or anything disturbing the balance which allows bad bacteria to take over can cause IBS.

Why does Hypnotherapy help Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Hypnotherapy is often thought to be therapy that only affects the mind, but as mind and body are inseparably joined hypnosis can also help physical ailments.

During a state of hypnosis, consciousness is not lost,
it becomes more selective, and typically a hypnosis patient becomes aware of internal processes rather than the outside world’s distractions.

Hypnotherapy has been by approved by the American Medical Association as a valid medical treatment since 1958, though the concept of using a state of hypnosis to alleviate both physical and mental ills has recurred throughout the history of medicine from ancient times.

By reaching the subconscious level of the mind, hypnotherapy can be used to alter the way a person consciously perceives health problems, and also promote new manners of response to them. Hypnosis and self-hypnosis have been repeatedly proven to be highly effective means of alleviating all of the various symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS, or “spastic colon”), including pain, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, nausea, and gas.

Most people report the actual experience of being hypnotized as pleasant, comfortable, and extremely relaxing. However, hypnotherapy is beneficial not only for the relaxation it induces, but for the state of suggestibility that characterizes it. In this state, the mind is open to receiving ideas and suggestions that promote positive thoughts and healing changes.[2] During normal waking hours, the window between the conscious and subconscious minds is closed, but any state of relaxation that results in alpha brain waves will open it. Typically, this happens during sleep, and dreams result. Hypnotherapy induces this same state of relaxation while the patient is awake, and allows helpful suggestions (such as those aimed at controlling health problems) to be directed into the subconscious mind.

Only ten percent or so of the population is not susceptible to hypnosis – the rest of us can turn to this therapy for relief of symptoms from disorders as wide ranging as: asthma, allergies, strokes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy, high blood pressure, nausea and vomiting, irregular heartbeat, muscle spasms, paralysis, and, with well-documented success rates, Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Hypnotherapy has in fact been proven successful at
reducing or even eliminating all Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms.

Over 15 years of solid scientific research has demonstrated hypnosis to be an effective, safe and inexpensive choice for IBS alleviation. It has been so overwhelmingly successful in this regard that Adriane Fugh-Berman, MD, chair of the National Women’s Health Network in Washington, DC, has said that hypnosis should be the treatment of choice for Irritable Bowel Syndrome cases which have not responded to conventional therapy. Since the “conventional therapy” offered to most IBS patients ranges from nothing at all to a lifetime prescription for semi-effective anti-spasmodic drugs, I take this statement as the closest thing to a whole-hearted endorsement an alternative therapy can hope to get from a mainstream medical spokesperson.

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome, one of hypnotherapy’s greatest benefits is its well-established ability to reduce the effects of stress. Your state of mind can have a direct impact on your physical well-being, even when you’re in the best of health. If you’re struggling with IBS, the tension, anxiety, and depression that comes from living with an incurable illness can actually undermine your immune system and further compromise your health.

Hypnosis can reduce this stress and its resultant negative impact by placing you in a deeply relaxed state, promoting positive thoughts and coping strategies, and clearing your mind of negative attitudes.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome in fact is almost uniquely suited to treatment by hypnosis or self-hypnosis, for several reasons. First, as just noted, stress-related attacks can be significantly reduced. Second, one of the most impressive aspects from hypnotherapy, and of tremendous benefit to IBS sufferers, is its well-documented ability to relieve virtually all types and degrees of pain. Finally, because IBS is not a disease at all but a syndrome, if you can relieve and prevent the symptoms, you have effectively cured yourself of the disorder. The underlying dysfunction may still be present but if you suffer no noticeable effects from it, you will be living an IBS-free life. This outcome is a definite possibility from hypnotherapy treatments.

As with other alternative therapies, though there is solid evidence that hypnotherapy can provide lasting health benefits for many patients, there is uncertainty about precisely how and why the treatments work. Most scientists believe that hypnotherapy acts upon the unconscious, and affects the body’s regulation of involuntary reactions that are normally beyond a person’s control. Hypnosis puts these autonomic responses under the patient’s power. Happily, treatment is suitable for people of all ages (children as well as adults), for males and females, and there are no risks or side effects.

TESTIMONIALS:
“I remember times when I had diarrhea so bad that it lasted for over two weeks without a break! And I didn’t see my doctor. In fact, I hated going to my doctor because nothing they gave me worked. Hypnotherapy is the best thing I have done for the IBS. I haven’t had a flare up for over a year.”
Donald Lawson, Santa Ynez

“I first went to Bunny to quit smoking, which I did after 3 sessions. When I discovered she works with IBS I was excited because I have been suffering with IBS since I lived in Puerto Rico. After 4 sessions my symptoms were 90% under control and now I have had no symptoms for over a year. And, I haven’t had a cigarette, either.”
Mona Rae, Santa Barbara

“My IBS was so bad I had to carry an extra change of clothing wherever I went. I was becoming a prisoner in my own house. After 2 sessions with Bunny I began to feel better. She really listened to me and helped me to get control of my body.
While there is no cure, studies show an 85-92% control with the use of hypnotherapy compared with 23-32% with traditional medicine.”
Lydia K, Westlake

“My struggles with IBS throughout high school and college made me miserable, and controlled my ability to function as a normal young woman. All I ever thought about was how my stomach hurt and it was running my life.

I had seen several different doctors, who all failed to help my condition. I was told I had everything from indigestion to severe depression and was given many different drugs and tests for problems that I didn’t have.

As my frustration grew and stomach got worse, I decided to seek a Hypnotherapist as a last resort. I truly thought this would be another useless attempt to get better, but Bunny Vreeland proved me wrong!

I am still not sure I truly understand the entire concept of hypnotherapy, but I am convinced it works. After just two sessions with Bunny, the constant concentration on my stomach began to fade. My persistent pain and discomfort slowly disappeared over the entire process and I began to take control of my life again.

Not only did Bunny’s hypnosis help to control the symptoms of IBS, but her ability to aid me in managing my bad habits, stress and hectic lifestyle was priceless.

Throughout my 12 sessions with Bunny, she helped me pinpoint what really caused my struggles with IBS, and she motivated me to make the changes necessary to control my problems.

Bunny is a true expert in her field, who gives 110% of her care, knowledge and effort to heal her clients. My experience with hypnosis was a total success and I would recommend it to anyone who suffers with IBS.

One year later, I still feel great and I know it’s all due to Bunny Vreeland’s experience and help. She is an amazing woman and has become a wonderful friend!”
